Colonial Halloween

Miss P finished her costume last night just after bed time. Whew. She thought it was a lot of work and there may have been some unhappy words at the thought of HAND sewing the snaps and inner ties. In the end she did the hand sewing and was THRILLED to have done it herself. She told me this morning that she thought she was smiling in her sleep all night! She put one of her dress up tutus on underneath to give it a little fullness at the top of the skirt; it was pretty droopy without the extra fluff. It is a good thing that the dress is long because we didn't have time to complete the look with period footwear.A colonial dress has been on her wish list since our visit to Colonial Williamsburg two years ago. I am happy that SHE is happy. The pattern is from my vintage children's sewing pattern collection.edit to add- I helped speed things along by using the ruffler foot on the featherweight to gather/ruffle the lace. She glue basted the lace to the front panel before stitching - that was much easier than stitching the wiggly pinned lace.

Petunia's Rose Dress

Sometimes I need a deadline in order to actually finish a project. This dress is one of those times. The Olympics gave me the push I needed to finish the knitting.  The preschool Mother's Day Lunch is the deadline I needed to finish the rest of the dress. P has been telling me that she wanted to wear this to Mother's Day Lunch at preschool on Friday.Last night I sewed on the buttons and this morning I worked in all of the thread tails.I am pretty sure she likes it.I like it too. There was a time back in March that I wasn't even sure I would finish this but now I am thrilled with the result! The dress is knit from a 1945 vintage knitting pattern book. I used two whole skeins of Grandma's Blessing from Briar Rose Fibers.

Swallowtail Shawl

After finishing the Ishbel shawl I still had a large ball of the lace weight alpaca left. I pulled out the Fall 2006 issue of Interweave Knits to knit the Swallowtail Shawl designed by Evelyn Clark. The first part of the shawl knit up very quickly. Then, I got to those nupps in the edge lace pattern. They just about had me pulling my hair out. Purl. Five. Together.  What a crazy idea - especially since two of the five were yarn overs.I think it was worth the effort once completed. Don't you think?

Shawl knitting is addictive.
