hand made

Colonial Halloween

Miss P finished her costume last night just after bed time. Whew. She thought it was a lot of work and there may have been some unhappy words at the thought of HAND sewing the snaps and inner ties. In the end she did the hand sewing and was THRILLED to have done it herself. She told me this morning that she thought she was smiling in her sleep all night! She put one of her dress up tutus on underneath to give it a little fullness at the top of the skirt; it was pretty droopy without the extra fluff. It is a good thing that the dress is long because we didn't have time to complete the look with period footwear.A colonial dress has been on her wish list since our visit to Colonial Williamsburg two years ago. I am happy that SHE is happy. The pattern is from my vintage children's sewing pattern collection.edit to add- I helped speed things along by using the ruffler foot on the featherweight to gather/ruffle the lace. She glue basted the lace to the front panel before stitching - that was much easier than stitching the wiggly pinned lace.

Christmas Countdown

This is not what I had planned to spend the day doing yesterday.P had the day off of school - I think it was a teacher work day. Anyway, the boys were back at college and she and I started the big tidy to get ready for our holiday decorating. We remembered that we need to get out our advent tree before Thursday. Then she remembered that the boys will not be here to take turns with the ornaments. We decided that we should make something to send them at school so that they can have their own countdown.I opened up a small envelope from my desk and used it for a pattern. The envelopes are made out of double sided craft/scrapbook paper and perfectly sized to hold a 3 by 5 inch index card. Miss P stamped the numbers and helped with the flower punching. It took us most of the day to make and number FIFTY envelopes. We don't have them all filled yet so we thought we'd send them in batches. I'll get the first few in the mail today!I know they don't read the blog so it's OK to post this here - as long as no one else spills the beans. Ahem. You know who you are. Don't tell. I want them to be surprised! If it hadn't taken ALL DAY to make these I probably would have made a set for you too.  Maybe D will share.I'm off to do some quilting.

The Beach Ball Blanket

Yesterday I was sewing with a red hot needle and flaming thread. I had started the quilting on this quilt Monday and finished the quilting yesterday.I quickly cut strips for the binding and sewed them on. Seeing that I still had some time before I had to meet the bus I started stitching it down to the back.I even put it through the washer and drier before my quilt meeting last night. It measures 38 x 45.5 inches.Whew.I think it might be time to adjust to a slower rhythm for fall and work on some of my hand quilting projects. I could use a take along project that doesn't require a lot of thought.P is usually very tired after school but we have gotten in a little play ground time. The fall food frenzy is also slowing down. We are still getting a fewraspberries for yogurt and cereal and I have a few more batches ofapplesauce to make too.
