A Sunny Day
We finally had a sunny day! It started off sunny and stayed sunny all day.The chickens even ventured out. They usually just stay in the barn when there is snow on the ground.
They even came over to visit on the front porch.
I hope they enjoyed their day out because we are supposed to get six inches of fresh snow tomorrow night.
Happy Father's Day
My dad - early 1940s. I love that you can see my grandfather's shadow in the foreground. He always wore a hat.Happy Father's Day!
Twenty Eight Pounds - of Garlic
Yesterday we harvested garlic. We save the largest garlic bulbs for planting the next year and each year the bulbs that we harvest are a little bigger.
We cut the tops, trim the roots,
and clean them up a bit.
Then we spread them out to dry for a while. Our total garlic harvest yesterday weighed in at over 28 pounds! They will loose a bit of water weight before they go into long term storage.I love that there are a few foods like garlic, onions, and potatoes that we haven't bought in years. We are able to grow enough and store them over the winter. We have just finished the last of our stored onions and the new onions can be harvested as needed as can the potatoes.
Baby Chicks - again
Every year we get new baby chicks and every year I love to watch them and try to photograph them.
Their little wing feathers grow so fast.
They are fun to watch when we let them out and they peck at the plants and bugs.
They are very wiggly and tricky to photograph. This one jumped right out of the picture to get a mosquito!
I left their cage outside for a while yesterday in the hopes that they would eat some mosquitoes but I don't think they made much of a dent in the population.
Live Baby Chicks
We got a call from the post office yesterday and hurried into town. We could hear the peeping as soon as we got through the door.Twenty seven little chicks in a box.
They enjoyed a bit of sunshine and fresh air.
Some of them even nibbled some clover flowers.
New chicks are always fun.
A Visit to the Farm
P's preschool class visited the farm yesterday. I did notice a few differences from our place. Look at those apples! The trees were loaded.
I could make a lot of sauce from all those blemish free apples.
The farmer helped each child pick a few apples.
After looking at the beehives, learning about bees, and having a hay ride we went to the pumpkin patch to choose pumpkins.
It didn't take miss P long to find the PERFECT pumpkin.
Thoughtful Sunday
"After all, the best part of a holiday is perhaps not so much to be resting yourself, as to see all the other fellows busy working."The Wind in the Willows, Kenneth Grahame, 1907
Back to the Fair
We went back to the fair yesterday.
We had to see the animals one more time.
P loved the piglets.
She wanted us to build a fence in the yard and get some baby pigs.
We tried to tell her that they quickly grow up to be big pigs.
I liked the sheep.
This white one played peek a boo with P.
There was a former State Fair Champion sheep shearer doing demonstrations. These sheep were waiting to be sheared.
The rabbits were cute too.
This day old calf was born at the fair.
A Day at the Fair
I love fair week!I like the community effort that goes into making it happen.I like looking at all of the entries and knowing so many of the people who made and grew things to enter.
I enjoy the festive colors.
I enjoy the animals and knowing many of the kids who raised them.
I like the variety of sights and activities.
I enjoy seeing people I have not seen during the summer.
I enjoy the activity that brings so many people together to support their community.
I love the fair but I am glad it is only one week in the year!
